What is the TINS Framework?

The TINS Framework (Theory-Grounded Integrative Negotiation Strategy Framework) was developed by the author shortly after completing an LLM in Alternative Dispute Resolution at Osgoode Hall Law School, York University, in 2016. Designed specifically for Biblical mediation in marriage and family conflict resolution, the TINS Framework offers a Biblically guided and theory-grounded approach that thoughtfully bridges Biblical teachings with contemporary conflict resolution practices. It integrates eight core Biblical principles with a flexible and context-sensitive application of six contemporary conflict resolution theories, equipping pastors/mediators with a structured yet adaptable strategy for promoting both conflict resolution and relational transformation.

This structured yet adaptable framework empowers pastors/mediators to facilitate and guide disputants through integrative negotiation, a vital component of Biblical mediation. Throughout the process, disputants will also uphold four core spiritual guidelines, ensuring that the resolution journey remains both principled and transformative. The process creates intentional opportunities for disputants to explore and address both past unmet needs and future needs, which are documented in each individual's Mutual Conflict Resolution Statement (MCRS). Drawing on the conflict-related data and insights captured in the MCRS, the pastor/mediator applies a carefully selected TINS strategy to facilitate integrative negotiation sessions. These sessions guide disputants through open and constructive dialogue, helping them to merge their needs and co-create mutually beneficial resolution options for conflict resolution and relational restoration.

Each TINS strategy is designed to tailor to the unique conflict dynamic of a given dispute, drawing from a flexible combination of four to six conflict resolution theories integrated with relevant Biblical principles. This multi-theoretical approach provides a balanced and structured process for guiding integrative negotiation. Rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all model, the TINS Framework prioritizes discernment, real-time adaptability, and a dual emphasis on both resolving the conflict and transforming the relationship. This ensures that each mediation process remains Biblically grounded, contextually sensitive, and genuinely responsive to the needs of the disputants.

The flexibility and depth of the TINS Framework make it highly effective and applicable across diverse cultural and generational contexts worldwide.
